Derek Taylor creates ‘videos about GNU/Linux, free software, open source software and related interests‘, and also writes articles on the same. Derek’s knowledge base, combined wid his presentation ability, can span from Old Time & Newbie Linux users to even Windows users who are looking for a Companion OS‘ to Windows 11. I have watched his videos ‘n read his articles for a few years now.

Who is Derek Taylor?

If I had to describe myself briefly, I would say that I am a Linux enthusiast and an advocate for free and open source software. My video content is largely Linux tutorials with a pretty heavy emphasis on topics such as learning the command line, window manager configurations, Vim, and Emacs.

Hey, he loves the “command line,” but I don’t hold that against him, i.e., Linux is a keyboard-based OS so some knowledge of commands for the terminal is needed. Derek doesn’t want you to fear the command line, just give it some respect…so to speak whilst smiling. 🙂

Despite the geekiness of my content, I have never actually worked in IT or a computer-related industry. Although Linux and technology have always been my hobby, I worked in the retail industry until recently.

Lost his ‘Day Job‘ to the China Virus power grab by Governments, and is now working full-time “making video content.”

My main production machine has an ASRock X399 Motherboard, 1920x Threadripper (12 core/24 thread), an AMD Radeon VII, 64G of 3000MHz RAM, and a 1TB NVMe drive with four 256GB SSDs in an Icy Dock bay … I use three 24-inch monitors, which I feel has greatly improved my productivity.

I have a server rack that has a Mackie ProFX12 mixer, a dbx 231s equalizer, a dbx 166xs compressor/limiter/gate, and a Behringer sonic exciter. The microphone I use is an Electro-voice RE27 N/D. If I need to monitor my audio as I record, I use the Audio-Technica ATH-AD1000X headphones.

I have been strictly a Linux user since 2008. The distro that I currently run is ArcoLinux with the xmonad window manager.

What is DistroTube?

DistroTube.com is a site created by Derek Taylor (DT), creator of the DistroTube (DT) video channel on YouTube and Odysee (LBRY). I create videos about GNU/Linux, free software, open source software and related interests. This site was created in Emacs and written in Org Mode. I use Org Export to convert the “org” files into HTML, and I based the design on the popular “ReadTheOrg” theme from Org-HTML-Themes

One could spend weeks going thru the DistroTube site. I have bookmarked it now, but used to run Google searches looking for his YouTubeStuff‘.

Have just started checking his videos to see if he can help me get into the Gentoo graphical desktop after installing it. Gentoo Linux has kicked my buttocks for almost two-years now and I need help! 😉

Conclusion

Yes, Derek creates great ‘Stuff‘ to watch ‘n read!

I will be putting this series on the Windows 11 page in case any Windows users are looking for a ‘Companion OS‘ and/or ‘Portable OS‘ and/or ‘Secondary OS‘.

Part 3 is sorta a surprise, so I’ll wait on saying what it is about, but it will be the last part of this short series.

LINUX IS LIKE A BOX OF CHOCOLATES – you never know what you’re gonna get!
