Porteus-CINNAMON-v5.0rc3-x86_64.iso @ just 356 MB means no *BLOAT* like most other Linux OSes have! Even as just a Release Candidate it keeps moving up in my Linux OS rankings – Karmi’s Top 10 Linux Distros.

My rankings include a ‘Category‘ classification, e.g. a Distro may be #1 in the ‘Desktop Duty‘ or ‘Portability & Rescue‘ or ‘Companion‘ categories. #1 in ‘Desktop Duty‘ may not be the Distro I use the most since Win11 Pro is my primary Desktop OS.

Category‘ classifications is still a work in progress. Porteus Linux is, or so far, has been my main working Linux OS even in the brief time I have tested ‘n used it. Sorta a ‘Portability & Companion & Linux Tester‘ all combined in one little package.  Hummm…yes, Porteus 5.0-rc3 CINNAMON’s new main category will be #1 ‘Linux Tester‘! By the time I finish this post it may be listed as #1 in ‘Portability & Linux Tester‘ since it appears very portable. 😉

Fedora Cinnamon SPIN has been my main working Linux OS for a long time, but I don’t really need all that Fedora offers…not for my Linux tests anyway. Besides, every time I boot it up, it wants to be updated, but I want to get some Linux testing work done. 😉

Porteus is like Fedora Cinnamon SPIN when booting up into the root user section, i.e. no login or passwords needed during bootup and no annoying “Authenticate” popups or other ‘Pesky Passwords’ during the desktop session to slow workflow down.

Porteus Linux Cinnamon is light, fast, Fulltime Linux Root User option, and a great Desktop Environment (DE). It has some issues, but all Linux OSes have some issues, which is one of the reasons why Win11 Pro is my primary OS.

  • UPDATE: I have been writing this post whilst doing other ‘Thangs, e.g. I actually joined a Linux Forum (Porteus Linux) the other day…can’t even remember the last time I had joined one. Anyway, whilst typing this post I had also been communicating wid a couple of people about the one issue I was having wid 5.0-rc3 – I could not get the clock to stay set!? However, this Cheatcode worked – APPEND changes=/mnt/sda1/Saved.dat timezone=America/New_York – added the “timezone=America/New_York” to the APPEND line and it now keeps accurate time.  \o/ ’Hippity hip Hoorah’ \o/

In the process of learning how to create ‘n use Porteus’ modules I came across AppImageHub for the first time.

Porteus Linux has a Text Editor that can be used as a basic word processor, but I wanted a little more, and since I was still new to modules decided to test LibreOffice. Tried Slackware Repositories first. Did a search there for LibreOffice ‘n got this. Converted libreoffice-7.3.2-x86_64-1alien.txz to a libreoffice-7.3.2-x86_64-1alien.xzm ‘n then moved that file to the modules folder and rebooted. Got this:

There’s the LibreOffice Suite, but I couldn’t get Writer to open…started spinning like it would open then stopped. I’ve only been testing ‘n using it for around 10 days now and it is a release candidate so I’m not sure if it’s me or the release candidate…or maybe both. The newly created module seems to work since the Office apps show up in the Menu. I might put that out to the forum in a day or two, tho the Text Editor has done a great job to this point.

During all of this searching ‘n testing for a word processor I came across AppImageHub. Followed some simple steps ‘n downloaded…then just clicked the LibreOffice-Still Applmage ‘n got this:

The Still version is considered basic, but I only use Writer anyway ‘n it opened:

Problem solved…at least until I get the Full LibreOffice version’s module working right. \o/ ’Hippity hip Hoorah’ \o/

Anyone closely following my posts knows that I have been searching a long time for a better portable Linux OS than Puppy Linux and a smaller OS version than Fedora Cinnamon SPIN. Puppy is perfect as a ‘Rescue‘ OS, but I don’t care for the Puppy’s DE as my main working Linux OS. Fedora Cinnamon SPIN has it all, but a tad too big, and it requires too much updating for what I actually wanted.

Porteus 5.0-rc3 CINNAMON may be exactly what I have been looking for, and I plan to move it to a new ranking slot…along wid some other minor changes on the Karmi’s Top 10 Linux Distros page. Something like this:

  • 1a. Porteus 5.0-rc3 CINNAMON – my main working Linux OS ‘n #1 in ‘Portability & Linux Tester‘ category.
  • 1b. AlmaLinux 8.5 KDE Plasma – #1 in Linux ‘Desktop Duty‘ category.
  • 1c. FossaPup64 9.5 (AKA Puppy Linux 9.5) – #1 in ‘Portability & Rescue‘ category.

Porteus ‘n Puppy are both excellent OSes in the ‘Companion‘ (to Win11 Pro for me) & ‘Portability‘ categories, but I try to limit how many get listed to just two. I may make some other minor ranking changes also, but those Top 3 are difficult to beat in their ‘Specialties‘ and/or categories.

  • 4/7/2022 UPDATE: Have added this post to new Porteus Linux page…

LINUX IS LIKE A BOX OF CHOCOLATES – you never know what you’re gonna get!
