My 2nd post on Calculate Linux – 1st was Calculate Linux – another Distro for ‘Password Dependent OS users’. Smoother this time, but still a ‘Password Dependent‘ OS, and still won’t install on my AMD Ryzen™ 9 3900X CM130 test computer; however, installs easily on the Intel® Core™ i7-8700 ‘Rose‘ test computer…again.

Calculate Linux is a Gentoo-based family of three distributions. 1) Calculate Directory Server is a solution that supports Windows and Linux clients via LDAP + SAMBA, providing proxy, mail and Jabbers servers with streamlined user management. 2) Calculate Linux Desktop is a workstation and client distribution (with a choice of Cinnamon, KDE Plasma, LXQt, MATE or Xfce desktops) that includes a wizard to configure a connection to Calculate Directory Server. 3) Calculate Linux Scratch is a live CD with a build framework for creating a custom distribution.

I went wid the Calculate Linux Desktop Cinnamon desktop – cldc-22-x86_64.iso @ 2.89 GBs, and used Ventoy for the ‘Live‘ USB. Ventoy has made testing Linux OSes so much easier (I test a lot of them)…it’s just so *EASY* to copy ‘n paste, and then just delete when finished. ‘No Dirty Dishes to Cleanup‘! 😉

Unfortunately, Calculate Linux Desktop wasn’t that easy to install on the AMD Ryzen™ 9 3900X CM130 test computer, but installed easily on the ‘Rose‘ Intel® Core™ i7-8700 test computer!?! This is an example of why Linux has never been (‘n will never be..) a successful or popular Desktop OS for Worldwide Desktop OS ‘Normal Users‘. I know one fanatical Linux user who can’t even install her favorite Linux Distro on all her computers, i.e. – Linux is the Mix ‘n Match of Desktop OSes.

Ditto on ‘Da “Unfortunately,” that isn’t the only problem when attempting to use any Linux Distro, e.g. Linux is made as an Enterprise OS that is not designed wid Home Desktop OS users in mind…which leads to annoying “Authenticate” popups every time the user tries to do something…which leads to a ‘Terminal-Centric‘ (keyboard focused) Enterprise OS where even a basic Wheel Mouse doesn’t work properly!?!?

  • Before ending this rant, ‘Stuff‘ like the above rant is why I created the Special *PURPOSE* Linuxes page. I love Linux, but definitely not as any Primary OS of mine. A Secondary OS, yes. A Portable OS, yes. An OS to install on old junk computers, yes, etc. ‘Specialized’ OSes…so to speak.

Back to Calculate Linux

There were also many successful results ‘n interesting ‘Twists‘ in this testing of Calculate Linux Desktop, and I have some pics.

That’s a GParted look of how the Calculate Linux installer partitioned the SSD. What is that sda2 “unknown” about??? Are the Russians spying on me!? 😉

More ‘n more Linux Distros are now offering to install Nvidia Drivers during installation, which makes it a lot easier on the users later.

It was easy to move around in Calculate Linux, and most everything worked; however, even tho speakers ‘n sound worked, testing them wid “Test Speakers” in System Settings was a little off.

It was a “Cinnamon Version” 5.0.6 desktop environment, but I was unable to figure out how to move the taskbar to the bottom. Here’s another look…

Interesting ‘Twist‘ of a Cinnamon DE, is when you move the mouse pointer to center-bottom area, a Dock ‘Thingie pops up. All the other folders ‘n windows looked like a normal Cinnamon DE.

Will add this post to the Gentoo ‘n Redcore Linux ‘n Pentoo ‘n T2_SDE page.

LINUX IS LIKE A BOX OF CHOCOLATES – you never know what you’re gonna get!
