Downloaded the sparkylinux-2021.06-x86_64-minimalgui & sparkylinux-2021.03-x86_64-rescue ISO’s the other day, and did some tests on them.

There are a lot of choices for SparkyLinux editions…LOTS! See my ‘SparkyLinux 6 Po-Tolo – Advanced Installer ‘n Root user ‘n Cinnamon DE’ 3/09/2021 post for more info. Will also use some of those pics here. Choices start Here:

  • I select the (Semi-) Rolling choice. Then the MinimalGUI edition:

  • I went wid the Sparky rolling “MinimalGUI” edition in order to get the Cinnamon DE:

The Cinnamon DE choice requires using the Advanced Installer ‘n I have the steps listed in the ‘SparkyLinux 6 Po-Tolo – Advanced Installer ‘n Root user ‘n Cinnamon DE’ post.

  • Here is the Sparky “MinimalGUI” System Info ‘n Cinnamon DE from this test:

These Debian-based Distros are all basically for ‘Password Dependent’ OS users who need the ‘Linux Nanny’ holding their hands in order to use a OS. Maybe their moms never weaned them properly…I dunno!?

The SparkyLinux MinimalGUI Cinnamon DE edition offers a Root User login option, but the sound doesn’t work there. This edition isn’t actually one of the qualified ‘Special *PURPOSE* Linuxes’ ‘n am only mentioning it for anyone interested in going wid the Cinnamon DE.

SparkyLinux Rescue Edition

Now, this is what I call a ‘Special *PURPOSE* Linuxes’ Distro. Not in the same ‘League’ wid Puppy Linux 9.5, but easy enough to use that some Windows 10 and/or future Windows 11 users might want to check it out.

Rescue Edition

Sparky “Rescue” Edition is an operating system which works in a live DVD/USB mode only (no installation on a hard drive). The Live system contains a large set of tools for scanning and fixing files, partitions and operating systems installed on hard drives.

Puppy Linux 9.5 can also save all your settings, apps, and updates – Sparky “Rescue” Edition can’t do that, so that ‘Live’ USB will need your previous settings added back in each time you use it.

  • To download the Rescue edition, you start Here, select the (Semi-) Rolling choice, and that takes you to a Special Editions section:

Just a simple Rescue package that is stable enough for new users to test.

There is also a full screen application page:

Windows 10 and/or future Windows 11 users can safely test the ‘Live’ USB Rescue edition on their Windows computer, by using the Boot Menu key during bootup. If they like how that works, then give Puppy Linux 9.5 a try…it is portable, will save all your settings ‘n changes, and can be used for Rescue whilst also offering a lot more apps to use. Sparky Rescue Edition is a great choice for first timers, IMHO.

Will add this post to the Special *PURPOSE* Linuxes page.

LINUX IS LIKE A BOX OF CHOCOLATES – you never know what you’re gonna get!
