Leave it to Ubuntu to be able to produce a Deepin Desktop Environment (DDE) more reliable ‘n stable than even Deepin Linux.

  • UbuntuDDE Remix – UbuntuDDE is a Remix flavor of Ubuntu system with Deepin Desktop Environment (DDE). UbuntuDDE is a Linux distribution based on Ubuntu with the most beautiful desktop environment.

UbuntuDDE Remix was actually the second Linux Distro that I tested with the Deepin Desktop Environment, the first was Deepin Linux. UbuntuDDE Remix isn’t one of the Ubuntu flavours, but it is mighty close to ‘da Launchpad!

I’ve been testing the UbuntuDDE Remix 20.10 (Groovy Gorilla) release, but there is also a 20.04.1 LTS (Focal Fossa) version. IMHO, if you want to use the Deepin Desktop Environment (DDE) fulltime, then UbuntuDDE Remix is going to have the safest ‘n most reliable Linux Distro version of it. Basically, if you don’t want the Chinese Government having a ‘Backdoor’ into your computer system, then go with UbuntuDDE Remix:

CNZZ incident

When Deepin was accused in 2018 of containing spyware through the use of statistics software within their App Store, the company made an official statement clarifying that it did not and would not collect private user information. According to Deepin, CNZZ is a website similar to Google Analytics that collects anonymous usage information such as the screen size, browser and other user agent information to “analyze how the Deepin store was being used, in order to improve it.”

On 20 July 2018, Deepin removed CNZZ statistics as part from the Deepin App Store website due to the backlash.

Deepin’s reputation was that it had relatively high CPU and memory demands while being based on GTK and HTML technologies, even when the system was idle. After switching to the Qt-based DE performance has improved, as Linux.com noted in its review of Deepin 15.7.

Concerns about connections to China

Radware’s head of threat research has risen concerns about analytics collected by Deepin, and whether these are sent to the Chinese government. While the CNZZ analytics service was removed, analytics are still collected, now by “Umeng+”. According to cybersecurity lawyer Steven T. Snyder, due to the sheer size of Deepin’s codebase, it is impossible to really scrutinize all the code comprising it to be sure the Chinese government doesn’t have backdoors. Deepin also has connections to Huawei, controversial in some countries, where its products have been banned.

China is a Totalitarian State and Deepin is developed by Wuhan Deepin Technology Co., Ltd.

UbuntuDDE Remix was the only Linux Distro running the Deepin Desktop Environment (DDE) that I had no problems with. Installation was simple ‘n fast; however, did have to make a sound setting change – from Digital Output:

To Line Output:

It has the newer looking Control Center:

That Control Center is so much easier to move around in than the other Control Center that is on the right side, IMHO.

It recognized my Pantum printer and only needed me to insert the printer’s driver:

Hard to beat Ubuntu or Ubuntu-based Distros when it comes to having drivers for the hardware you use. That’s just one of the main reasons that Ubuntu is the most popular Linux Distro – by a *HUGE* margin:

Another Desktop/Laptop Operating System Share by Version chart shows Linux with a “1.28%” and Ubuntu represents most of that.

This post will bring an end to this Deepin Desktop Environment (DDE) series.

LINUX IS LIKE A BOX OF CHOCOLATES – you never know what you’re gonna get!
