The Librem 5 costs $699…I paid $20 at Walmart for mine some years ago – my old prepaid phone was going bad, and Verizon told me I could get one at Walmart to replace the bad one. Some years before that, I had signed up with one of the former “Ma Bell’s” ‘Bells’ just before Verizon bought that ‘Bell‘ – OK, just found the old receipt from Alltel in late 2008. When Verizon took over they notified me that I was being “Grandfathered” in, and that my account now would be with Verizon. They auto-billed me $15 every other month up until a few years ago, when they discovered their mistake and then started auto-billing me $15 every month. My minute rate is still $0.15 pay-per-minute, and my account balance is $195.93 (I rarely use the phone).

Librem 5, the $699 Linux Phone, Has Started Shipping to Backers

The Librem 5, a crowdfunded Linux phone with user privacy at its heart, has begun shipping to backers …snip… The Librem 5 was successfully funded back in 2017, raising just over $2.1 million in two months.

While the device was initially expected to ship in late 2018 the release was later pushed back to April 2019, then “Q3 2019”.

Today the handset finally begins shipping — though not to everyone…

$699 Linux phone, and the Purism site says – “Backordered. Place your order now to reserve your spot!” “Purism” – I don’t trust groups or companies that name themselves in such a way i.e. trust-in-Purism because we represent ‘Purity’. Maybe it is a good company, but the name turns me off…such a naming is akin to the Fascist neo-KKK organization ANTIFA falsely claiming to be anti-Fascist. Socialists, Communists, Fascists, Nazis and Progressives all represent hate and the desire to use Government Power in order to force their beliefs on all others.

There were five forms of governance that migrated from theory to reality in the 20th Century: Socialism, Communism, Fascism, Nazism and Progressivism. The common denominator among them was unprecedented control and regulation by the State over human activity. It is delusional to think that the totalitarian impulse expired with the 20th Century.

Anyway, back to Librem 5 verses my Verizon’s Samsung Gusto™ 2 Prepaid. What will it cost for a provider, once you pay $699 to “reserve your spot” for this Linux phone? Bet it costs more than $15 a month, huh.

Librem 5, the phone that focuses on security by design and privacy protection by default.

Yeah, right! The President of the United States of America can’t even have a secure and private phone conversation – in the *OVAL OFFICE* – so Librem 5 looks like it may be using false advertising.

Librem One Campaign Will De-Google Your Life for $7.99/m – heck, it costs $8 a month, after you finally get the phone, to “De-Google” it, so this Linux phone is probably going to be very expensive to operate.

Thanks, but No Thanks, Purism! I’ll stick with my old $15 a month, $0.15 a minute Samsung Gusto™ 2 phone, and at that price I don’t care what OS it runs.
